Raleigh, NC—Today, Clarence Henderson, a pioneer in the civil rights movement, announced his endorsement of E.C. Sykes for North Carolina Secretary of State.
“E.C. has proven he is a champion for freedom and the conservative values that North Carolina desperately needs in a time when our values are being threatened. It’s not often that we get a Christian business executive willing to take their leadership skills and devote them to serving the people,” said Henderson. “The North Carolina values that E.C. has built his campaign on are what we need for the people of North Carolina. I am happy to extend to him my full endorsement and look forward to working with him as Secretary of State to create a better future for North Carolinians.”
In 1960, Clarence Henderson and three other civil rights activists participated in a sit-in at the Woolworth lunch counter in Greensboro, inspiring countless other civil rights activists across the country. In 2000, Henderson received the 40th Anniversary Sit-In Participant Award and in 2013, Governor Pat McCrory appointed him to Chairman of the North Carolina Martin Luther King Jr. Commission. As of May 2017, Henderson was appointed President of the Frederick Douglass Foundation for North Carolina. As of November 2019, Henderson serves on the advisory board of Black Voices for Trump.
“Clarence Henderson has served as an inspiration to both me and our campaign. Since 1960, he has motivated a myriad of young people through his leadership. He is one of North Carolina’s most principled role models and I couldn’t be more honored to have his support in our campaign,” said Sykes. “Mr. Henderson continues to be a leader in our state, spreading the very same values that serve as the foundation of our campaign. He’s witnessed the harm that career politicians satisfied with the status quo have done to our state. Our campaign values his guidance and wisdom as we continue spreading our message to every voter who wants to see our state do better.”
Clarence Henderson’s energetic involvement in his church as Head Elder, New Members Coordinator, Sunday school teacher, and Finance Committee member, as well as his experience as a teacher, college administrator, entrepreneur, and motivational speaker has given him a unique perspective on what confronts society today. Recently, Henderson has been traveling around the country encouraging black voters to join the Republican Party and to encourage the party to welcome black voters.
Clarence Henderson’s endorsement of the Sykes for Secretary of State campaign comes only days after E.C. Sykes officially filed his campaign with the NC Board of Elections. Since the launch of the campaign in August, E.C. has received an outpouring of grassroots energy and passionate support for his message of North Carolina values. Republicans in every corner of the state are lining up behind the Sykes campaign, identifying him as the only candidate who will defeat Elaine Marshall in November and steer North Carolina back on course.
